a very quiet practice is making a lot of noise and we’re all finally listening. Modern times require a modern approach to meditation and that’s what M N D F L is all about.

a very quiet practice is making a lot of noise and we’re all finally listening. Modern times require a modern approach to meditation and that’s what M N D F L is all about.

M N D F L exists to enable humans to feel good.

And, well, it’s time to help more humans feel all that goodness. We know firsthand how meaningful, beneficial and life-changing meditation can be. We also know the value of highly qualified authentic teachers who have an ability to make the practice accessible and relatable.

In 2019, we want to do more than share meditation with you - we want to empower you to teach it.

We’re looking for a handful of humans who want to gain the knowledge, experience and confidence to spread that meditation goodness.

You in?

We hope so.

Q: What is the application deadline and interview process for Early Bird Applicants?

A: The deadline for Early Bird enrollment is July 28th; all interviews to be accepted for Early Bird will take place between July 29th-Aug 1st.

Q: What is the application deadline and interview process for Regular registration?

A: The deadline for Regular admission is September 1st; all interviews to be accepted for Regular Admission will take place between September 3rd-6th.

Q: Do I need to take five classes at MNDFL before applying or can I do that after?

A: While it’s okay to apply beforehand, you won’t be given an interview until you meet that pre-req. The reason it’s important to take at least five classes with us is so that you really understand the feel and mix of traditions you are getting involved in if accepted into this program and so that you feel confident this is where you would want to do such an in-depth training.

Q: What do you look for in potential participants?

A: The first thing would be that the student enters the program with a firmly established mindfulness and loving-kindness practice. As one would be certified to teach that upon graduation, it’s important you already know it well so that you can speak from your personal experience of those practices. The second big thing would be that the students are kind.

Q: When will I know if I was awarded a scholarship?

A: Scholarship recipients will be contacted on September 7th after all interviews have been completed.

Q: Can I do this program even though I live out of state?

A: Not really! It’s 20 Tuesday evenings in a row and one weekend a month so that would be a pretty regular commute back and forth. We have had people move to the area from as far away as Ireland and Tokyo to do this program, and invite you to consider basing yourself here if you wish to do this training.

Q: Does this program guarantee a teaching spot at MNDFL?

A: No, although subject to studio availability there might be an opportunity to teach a MNDFL Community Class which is a wonderful opportunity to gain real teaching experience.

Q: Where are the evening workshops and weekend retreats held?

A: All Tuesday nights will be held at the Greenwich Village MNDFL location and weekend retreats are held at one of our three locations. Exact locations for the weekends will be announced closer to the start date and are slated in relation to other programmatic needs.

Q: Is the scholarship a full or partial scholarship?

A: We have two full scholarships that we offer: one for a person of color and one for a gender non-conforming person. This is for the full tuition for the MNDFL teacher training program, although not the weeklong retreat as that is through a third party. *Please note that acceptance into the program does not guarantee a scholarship.

Q: Are MNDFL classes and events included as part of my tuition?

A: You receive an unlimited membership at MNDFL for the five months of the program, meaning that you can take as many MNDFL classes as you like. MNDFL events such as sound baths and MNDFL Mondays are not included.

Q: What’s the deal with mentors?

A: You get to pick your own mentor from the 40+ teachers on the MNDFL faculty. We recommend you work with a Buddhist teacher, as the two practices one will be empowered to teach (mindfulness of the breath and loving-kindness) stem from the Buddhist tradition. If you already have a deep background within Buddhism and prefer a mentor in another tradition we are certainly open to that. You and your mentor meet once a month for the five months of the program for an hour each session at a location and time conveniently arranged between the two of you.

Q: Where do the weeklong retreats take place?

A: At one of the many retreat centers across the country of course! Don't worry we have a list of recommended retreats which we will provide you with at the start of the program. We recommend attending a retreat that corresponds with a particular Buddhist lineage or tradition you may be interested in studying in long-term. If you are curious about pricing for weeklong retreats we recommend perusing retreat websites for Insight Meditation Society, Karme Choling, Spirit Rock and Shambhala Mountain Center just to get a sense of different options.

Q: Is the weeklong retreat covered in my tuition?

A: Retreat fees are not included in tuition as they are run through retreat centers, not MNDFL.

Q: Do I need to complete the weeklong retreat while doing the five month program?

A: If you'd like to be certified and immediately begin teaching when the program completes, then yes, we suggest doing the retreat  during the program. That said, there are many occasions when a participant has chosen to do the weeklong retreat after the program concludes, and that’s lovely. The only thing in that case is that the person should not publicly begin teaching meditation until they have fulfilled that pre-req.
